PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Portland Bureau of Transportation and the Portland Police Bureau wanted to raise awareness for pedestrian safety and Oregon traffic laws by increasing patrol at a southwest Portland intersection Friday.

Officers were at the intersection of Southwest Capitol Highway at Southwest Miles Street between 7:30 and 11:30 a.m. to make drivers aware of the speed limit in the area, and to stop for pedestrians.

According to the Portland Bureau of Transportation, this location was chosen at the request of the community, which had been active in educating and encouraging drivers to be alert, aware and slow down.

Officials from the Portland Bureau of Transportation said enforcement actions like these are a key part of the effort to reach its Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

Officers issued 45 citations and 5 warnings in total.

Under Oregon Law, every intersection is a legal crosswalk whether it is marked or unmarked. People driving stop and stay stopped for people walking when the pedestrian is in the travel lane or adjacent lane.
