PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Emotions ran high in court Friday as a Portland man faced sentencing for shooting and killing his own cousin.

William Heyser sat next to his lawyer, choosing not to make any statements about the case or his sentence.

In March 2015, Heyser and his cousin, Arthur Palmer III, got into an argument and Heyser shot Palmer with a shotgun. The two men are cousins, they lived right next door to each other in northeast Portland and Palmer died on scene.

Relatives of the men made final statements to Heyser saying he still hasn’t taken responsibility for his actions and their family will never be the same.

The victim’s brother-in-law, Gregory King, read a statement on behalf of another family member, “I hope you die in prison just before your release. May all of your days in prison be haunted by Arthur Palmer III.”

“You have caused my mother great pain and sorrow,” said the victim’s sister, Kalin King. “You have scarred my nephew and cousin for life with images of Arthur laying dead, with half of his face blown off from a gun you chose to use.”

Heyser made a plea deal with the district attorney and pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He will spend 17 years in prison.
