Portland locals honor Memorial Day at Willamette National Cemetery

Posted: Updated:

An annual Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Willamette National Cemetery Monday morning to honor the many American soldiers who fought and died for their country.

The Memorial Day ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and will feature music, flag displays, a rifle salute and a flyover by the Oregon Air National Guard.

Over the weekend about 148,000 small American flags were placed throughout the cemetery by 1,200 members of the Thunderbird Boy Scouts and their parents.

Other ceremonies took place throughout the weekend, including Sunday’s memorial for those who fought in the Korean War.

The Willamette National Cemetery is located at 11800 SE Mt Scott Blvd. in Portland.

A motorcycle shop in Gladstone raised a large POW flag Sunday in honor of Memorial Day. The flag, one of the largest in the country, represents soldiers who are prisoners of war or listed as missing in action.
