HOOD RIVER, OR (KPTV) -

A California man was arrested after witnesses saw him loading his badly beaten girlfriend into the back of an SUV outside a McDonald's restaurant in Hood River, according to police.

Officers responded to the McDonald's parking lot on Cascade Avenue on Friday.

They discovered a 35-year-old California woman in need of immediate medical attention in the backseat of a Nissan Xterra.

The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition with injuries described as life-threatening. An update on her condition has not been released by police.

The woman's boyfriend, Matthew Irwin, 41, of California, was arrested on charges of attempted murder and first-degree assault. He remained in the Northern Oregon Regional Corrections Facility on Monday.

Investigators said the assault was believed to have taken place Thursday evening near Wanapa Street in Cascade Locks.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact Detective Sal Rivera at the Hood River Police Department, 541-387-5257.
