Cleveland HS celebrates 100 years with Rose Festival performance

Posted: Updated:

This school year is ending on a high note for Cleveland High School.

The school's marching band will be playing in this weekend's Rose Festival Starlight Parade.

Band director Gary Riler wasn’t sure they would get in to the parade. He's rebuilding a program that's been through a lot these last few years.

"I told the kids I was going to submit an application to march in the parade, I said it's a long shot but we'll try."

Hearing that they will be marching in the parade, something that hasn’t been done in 13 years, was music to their ears.

“It's a big thing because, to me, the Starlight Parade has always been the big parade," senior Dillon Osleger explained.

The students will be wearing uniforms dating back to 1985, older than they are, and representing a school as it is celebrating its 100th year.

Craig Iverson, a Rose Festival Junior Prince in 1955 and a former Cleveland High marching band member, said he is looking forward to seeing the class of 2016 bring that history alive once again.

"I know I looked forward to it,” he said. “It was fun and exciting marching down the parade route, people were applauding the band."

Cleveland will be playing two songs along the parade route, “Walkin’ On Sunshine” and “Let’s Get It Started.”

If you can’t make it down to the Starlight Parade, you can watch it live on Fox 12 on June 4 from 9 to 11 p.m.
