Fire crews rescued 21 construction workers Tuesday after they became trapped in a temporary construction elevator in downtown Portland.

Portland Fire & Rescue said the incident happened at southwest 12th Avenue and Jefferson Street around 7:45 a.m.

Portland fire officials said there was an issue with the locking mechanism and the elevator was stuck in between the 6th and 7th floors.

Officials added that permanent elevators have several  backup systems to make sure the car locks in place.

Because the elevator is temporary, there are no such systems available.

Crews said all occupants were able to get out safely on the 7th floor. One worker was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

PF&R said these type of situations and rescues are rare.
