GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A bicyclist told police he was distracted by a car spinning its tires when he rolled into the pathway of a MAX train at a pedestrian crosswalk.

Police responded to 176th and East Burnside at 4:15 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators said the MAX train hit the bicyclist, sending him into a crosswalk railing 10 feet away.

The 63-year-old man was taken to the hospital for injuries to his left leg.

A Gresham Police Department spokesperson said the bicyclist admitted not hearing or seeing the train until it was too late, telling officers he was distracted by a nearby car spinning its tires and creating a loud screeching sound.

According to police, the bicyclist acknowledged responsibility for the collision.

The MAX operator spotted the bicyclist and slowed the train and rang the bell to try to alert him, according to police.
