Two wild condors on the California coast are the unwitting parents of a chick that began its life at the Oregon Zoo.

In late April, staff at the Ventana Wildlife Society in Salinas noticed that a pair of wild condors, named Condor No. 310 and Condor No. 219, had an egg that was past its expected hatching date.

Joe Burnett, Ventana's condor program coordinator, decided to get a closer look at the egg, rappelling halfway down an 180-foot cliff near Big Sur to reach the nest.

Burnett determined the egg had failed, meaning it wouldn't hatch.

Burnett then contacted the Los Angeles Zoo, which reached out to other condor breeding facilities to see if any of them had an egg that could take its place.

It just so happened one of the eggs at the Oregon Zoo's Jonsson Center for Wildlife Conservation was beginning the hatching process and was a perfect candidate.

So on April 28, Oregon Zoo Condor Keeper Mike Clark hopped on a plane with Egg No. 7 and flew to California, where Burnett slipped the egg into the nest.

The Oregon Zoo said the wild condors immediately took to incubating the egg, which likely hatched a few days later.

Wildlife experts haven't gotten an up-close look at the condor chick yet, but Burnett said the parents have been switching their nesting duties in intervals that suggest they're feeding a chick.

Experts from the Ventana Wildlife Society, National Park Service, Los Angeles Zoo and a veterinarian will soon conduct two health check-ups on the chick: One at 60 days and another at 120 days, when it will be given a radio tag to track its progress.

Five chicks have hatched at the Oregon Zoo's Jonsson Center in rural Clackamas County since March and the final chick is expected to hatch by this weekend.
