Gresham family reunited with daughter's urn after apartment fire

Posted: Updated:

A Gresham family is among many who are without a home after a fire at Cleveland Station Sunday morning.

“I heard the second beep and immediately my brain thought - fire alarm,” Lorenzo Espinoza said.

Espinoza said he was sleeping when the fire started and tried to put it out.

“By that time the roof was already above his head,” Espinoza’s fiancée, Megan Lafontaine said.

The couple said when the fire was out they knew their apartment unit was destroyed, but hoped firefighters would find their first daughter Mia’s ashes.

When their daughter Mia was thirteen months old, she passed from health complications. She died six days after her sister Aria was born.

“The only thing I have to find is her urn,” Espinoza said. “That’s the little piece we have of her.”

Lafontaine said crews found the heart shape urn melted and plans to transfer her remains into a different urn.

The couple hopes to find a new place to live soon, because Lafontaine is expecting a baby girl in several months.

“Planning a wedding, trying to buy a house, pregnant and now this happens…it’s a lot,” Lafontaine said.

Friends and family have set up a fundraising account in the hopes to help Lafontaine and Espinoza.

Gresham fire crews report the fire was suspicious and asks the public to call police if they have any information.
