BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

A Beaverton woman is furious after her son came home and said his classmates were watching porn on a school computer. The children are in third grade.

Jennifer Allen’s son goes to Barnes School. On Tuesday, she says he was in computer class when he walked over to some other students and saw them watching a pornographic video on a school laptop.

“I asked him how he felt when he watched it. He said it made him feel gross,” recalled Allen. “You know, it bothered him enough to make him tell me right after school.”

Allen said the children were in a classroom, working on the school’s Chromebooks. Allen emailed the school’s principal and met with her son’s teacher Wednesday morning. She tells FOX 12 the teacher told her the Chromebooks do not have any parental controls on them.

However, Beaverton School District leaders said they have two layers of filters on school computers – one on the BSD Wi-Fi signal and with Google Safe Search.

A spokeswoman for the district said students may be able to get around those safeguards by using a cell phone as a hot spot, but Jennifer Allen doesn’t buy that.

“These are third graders,” said Allen. “They’re not going to know how to work around these things very well. And even if that is the case and there are safeguards, they’re not working. The supervision isn’t there. Third graders shouldn’t be in a group watching pornography.”

District leaders say there were two adults in the classroom at the time, but the incident is being investigated.
