BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

A man who was driving while high on drugs with five children in his car and caused a six-car crash in Beaverton has been sentenced to one year in prison.

Michael Smith, 43, of Longview, was arrested in March after the crash at Southwest Murray Boulevard and Hart Road.

Investigators said Smith slammed his SUV into five other cars at the intersection. He had his wife and five children in the car at the time. Police said he had a restraining order against him filed by his wife.

Officers determined he was under the influence of a "controlled substance," but did not identify the specific drug.

There were no serious injuries in connection with the crash, but tensions were still high in the courtroom Wednesday as other drivers confronted Smith.

"I have been through hell because of you, not because you had a heart attack or something; you were in your vehicle and had an accident because you chose to take drugs and get on the road," one woman said, pointing at Smith.

Smith read an apology letter in court Wednesday, saying he feels remorse and is grateful things didn't end up worse.

Smith pleaded guilty last week to charges of DUII, reckless endangerment, fourth-degree assault and second-degree criminal mischief. Eleven other charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal.

Smith was sentenced to one year in prison Wednesday and ordered to have no contact with any of the other people involved in the crash.
