PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The monthly cost for residential garbage, recycling and composting service will decrease for many customers after the Portland City Council approved 2016-2017 rates.

The City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability said this is the fourth year in a row that Portland has maintained or lowered rates to garbage and recycling.

"Portlanders are doing their part in making our city more sustainable by decreasing garbage waste and increasing recycling and composting. And now our garbage and recycling companies are working more efficiently, with cleaner trucks," Mayor Charlie Hales said. "Keeping rates steady or reducing them provides an incentive to continue that trend, and I'm pleased we're able to do so for the fourth consecutive year."

The new rates for 2016-2017 will go into effect on July 1.

Rates can be found online at www.portlandoregon.gov/bps/rates.
