PPS: Schools operating normally amid radon testing results

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Public Schools officials said Thursday that all schools will continue to operate normally despite the recent discovery of high radon levels in some buildings.

A PPS spokeswoman said Environmental Protection Agency guidelines state that during warm weather, schools must keep a steady air flow throughout their buildings.

Having a steady air flow helps keep radon levels low, according to PPS.

Officials said radon levels can become a problem during the winter months when doors and windows are closed and the heaters are running consistently.

PPS said more testing will begin Monday.

Officials clarified that the original testing for radon levels was not in reaction to the high levels of lead found in the PPS drinking water last week.

The radon testing was performed because of a new state mandate. PPS received the results showing high radon levels in some schools Wednesday night.

The last day of school for students is June 9.
