Portland dispensaries banking on edible marijuana business

Posted: Updated:

Now that Oregonians can legally purchase edible marijuana products from licensed dispensaries, the Portland shops that sell the products are hoping to attract new customers, and generate new profits.

Before June 2, edibles were only available to medical marijuana patients and were available to recreational users in Washington.

“I know for a fact people have been going across the river to Vancouver because all of this is available. They can buy this,” said Jonathan Walker, who works at Foster Buds on Southeast Foster Rd.

Walker hopes to win those customers back, now that they can purchase edibles closer to home.  That, in turn, will keep profits in Portland, and generate tax revenue for the State of Oregon.

In addition, Walkers said, the change in the law creates new business opportunities for companies who manufacture edible products.

“It’s crazy just to see all the different products, all the different businesses that have come out of the legalization. It’s fun to see,” said Walker.

Walker said he has been encouraging customers buying edibles to use them in moderation, because the effects can be more intense and last longer than they might when smoking marijuana.

Walker said the products should also be kept out of reach of children.
