Rescue teams suspend search for man presumed drowned on Santiam River

MARION COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

Rescue teams have suspended their search for a missing man, who is presumed drowned in the Santiam River near Jefferson.

Marion County Sheriff's Office said a man and a woman were swimming just west of Interstate 5 when the man began struggling in a whirlpool.

According to MCSO, the man went underwater and has not surface. He is presumed drowned.

MCSO is being assisted by the Linn County Sheriff's Office dive team, Albany Fire Department, Jefferson Fire Department and a REACH helicopter.

MCSO said divers told deputies that the water where the man disappeared is about 13 feet deep with heavy currents.
