Rose City Rowing's varsity boat is off to the national championships

Some of Portland’s finest will be representing the Rose City at this weekend’s youth national rowing championships in New Jersey.

The men's varsity boat from the Rose City Rowing club recently hooked the Northwest Regional Championship in record time.

The club practices six days a week, sometimes twice a day, on the Willamette River or Vancouver Lake.

“This is the first time the men's eight has won at Rose City and the competition is really fierce so it was a really huge deal for the club," said head coach Nick Haley.

The non-profit club was founded by Haley in 2004.

"By the time they shove off the dock, it's all them. For a lot of these athletes that is one of the things that is most attractive. There aren't a bunch of people on the shore giving them instructions. They just go out and do their own thing and it's all them," said Haley.

Individual drive, but bonded by boat, rowing is a team endeavor.

“It is a feeling of communal winning,” said Nate Hochman, a senior at Catlin Gabel.

"This sport translates well into life, I have learned life lessons and I think Nick has helped me grow into the person I am today,” said Peter Quinton, a senior at Grant High School.

Quinton is dipping his toes into the Ivy League waters, and will be off to row for Harvard in the fall.

Like Quinton, Benson’s Pau Turina has committed to row for the Huskies.

In addition to the eight men on the team, there is also a young woman.

Nicole Gooding, a sophomore at Lakeridge, is a coxswain, just like coach Haley was.

"I have gotten more comfortable with them and I can be myself around them and tell them what to do…well sometimes,” said Gooding.

Now the boys, and girl, are off to nationals in New Jersey on Monday!
