The Division III Track and Field Championships were last weekend, and George Fox University undergrad Asia Greene placed third in the long jump in her third straight trip to nationals.

But taking flight wasn't always in her plans for life.

"I never liked track," Greene said. "It was more like a chore than a sport."

It went from a chore to soaring in the long jump.

"I just take off and it's like, so quiet," she said. "It's just like silence, and then I land and it's like, ahhhh."

Up until three years ago, Greene, a Roosevelt High School graduate, hadn't competed in track since her sophomore year at De La Salle North Catholic. The plan was to play basketball for the Bruins.

"After the season, I was like, 'OK, I am really skinny. I should probably lift some weights,'" she said.

After freshman year in Newberg, Greene was spotted doing box jumps in the gym by George Fox track coach John Smith.

"I got an email, 'hey, have you done track? you should do track,'" she said. "I was like, what the heck?!"

Never a fan of running, jumping was the thing for the former hooper.

"I start rocking and it's go time," said Greene.

Go time is flying time for the West Region Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

"It seems like forever but I swear, it's only like a second," said Greene.

Working on her master's degree to become an English teacher, Greene crafts her poetry into empowering short stories through spoken word.

"People are like, oh my gosh, I did not know that was coming out of this little thing," she said. "I kind of feel like it's the same with track. I am definitely not the biggest person out there, the strongest person out there ... but once I step on the runway and jump, it's like, OK we have to actually look out for her maybe."
