PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A 44-year-old Vancouver man died when his car was hit from behind by a semi and caught fire on Interstate 5 on Sunday, according to police.

Emergency crews responded to I-5 southbound at Jantzen Beach-Hayden Island at 4:30 p.m.

Investigators said a 2012 International truck and trailer driven by 51-year-old Bruce Kelbert of British Columbia failed to stop for traffic ahead and hit the back of a 2004 Suzuki sedan.

The driver of the Suzuki, 44-year-old Benjamin Craig King of Vancouver, was pronounced dead at the scene.

King's car burst into flames as it was crushed between the semi and a 2007 Lincoln Town Car, according to police.

The driver of the Lincoln, 79-year-old Delpha Camp, and her passenger were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

A fourth vehicle, a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero driven by 46-year-old Ingrid Hernandez, was also struck in the crash. Hernandez and a passenger were taken to the hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Officers consulted with a deputy district attorney from the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office and issued Kelbert a traffic citation for careless driving while the investigation into the crash continues.

Police said Kelbert remained at the scene after the crash, cooperated with investigators and did not show any signs of impairment. There was also no indication of distracted driving by Kelbert, according to police.

I-5 southbound through Hayden Island was shut down for hours following the crash.
