PENDLETON, OR (KPTV) -

A woman walking on the side of the road with her four children accepted a ride from a driver passing by, but then she suddenly cut the man in the neck, according to the Umatilla County Sheriff's Office.

Vanessa Logman, 30, of Meacham, was arrested Saturday.

Investigators said a 48-year-old man from Hermiston and his female passenger offered Logman a ride to Pendleton after seeing them walking along East Birch Creek Road near Indian Lake.

Deputies said Logman and the children got in the back seat of the car, but she "suddenly and without warning" cut the driver's neck.

The driver stopped the car and, with the assistance of his passenger and a passerby, subdued Logman until law enforcement arrived at the scene, according to deputies.

The driver required eleven stitches to his neck. His passenger also suffered minor injuries during the incident.

Investigators said Logman claimed she wanted out of the vehicle and cut the man to make him stop. The driver and his passenger told detectives Logman made no such request and everything was peaceful until the attack.

Logman told investigators she has a history of mental illness.

Logman was booked into the Umatilla County Jail on charges of attempted murder and second-degree assault.

Umatilla Tribal Children and Family Services took her children into protective custody.

The case is under further investigation and will be forwarded to the Umatilla County District Attorney's Office.
