SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Deputies have recovered the body of a 35-year-old man who drowned in the Santiam River.

Crews began searching for Warren Franklin Jr. near the Santiam Rest Area south of Salem just west of Interstate 5 on Friday evening.

Franklin, of Salem, was swimming with a woman when he began struggling in a whirlpool, according to deputies. He went under and did not come back up to the surface of the water.

Divers said the water where he was last seen is 13 feet deep with heavy currents.

Franklin was identified by deputies Monday. His body was recovered at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

A boater discovered his body about a half mile from where he was last seen swimming.

"The Sheriff's Office would like to send its condolences to the Franklin family also to remind the public to please use caution when recreating in open water and always wear or have a life vest accessible at all times," according to a Marion County Sheriff's Office statement.
