PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Students from Oregon and southwest Washington were awarded $77,000 in scholarships Saturday as part of the Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program.

During a ceremony held Saturday in Portland, 60 students were all awarded $1,000 scholarships from the Comcast Foundation.

In addition to the general scholarship, Ashley Denney from La Center High School and Ignacio Garcia Reyes from Centennial High School in Gresham were awarded an additional $4,000 and Montserrat Mendez Higuera from Lincoln High School in Portland earned another $9,000 in Comcast Founder’s Scholarships.

Denney maintained a 3.99 cumulative GPA while also serving as the vice president of both the Student Council and National Honor Society and as the co-captain for the varsity soccer and basketball teams.

Reyes kept a 3.83 GPA and was represented the Academy for Architecture, Construction and Engineering robotics team at the Oregon Leadership Institute. He is the first person in his family to attend college.

Higuera is a varsity athlete with a 3.5 GPA who gave a TEDx Youth Talk in 2015. She will be studying journalism at the University of Oregon.

“Our Leaders and Achievers Scholarship winners exemplify leadership and are committed to academic excellence and community service,” Rodrigo Lopez, regional senior vice-president of Comcast Oregon/Southwest Washington, said.  “We are honored to recognize their achievements, and excited to support them as they continue their educational journeys.”

In addition to the $77,000 in scholarships, 20 students received iPad minis to aid with their studies.

The Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program awards scholarships to students who work to reach their full potential, make positive impacts on their communities, are involved in their schools and serve as role models for the other students in their schools.

Since 2001, the Comcast Foundation has awarded more than $25 million to nearly 25,000 seniors across the country through the program. For more on the Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program, visit their Facebook page.
