ASTORIA, OR (KPTV) -

An Idaho man is accused of trying to kidnap a 5-year-old girl watching sea lions with her family on the Oregon coast.

Astoria police received a report of an attempted abduction at the East Mooring Basin at 10:54 a.m. Monday.

Officers learned that a Portland father was visiting Astoria with his children when his daughter was approached by a man unknown to them.

Investigators said the man, later identified as 29-year-old Robert John Miller of Rupert, Idaho, was directing the girl to leave with him.

The father stepped in, alerted others nearby and one witness snapped a photo of the suspect while someone else called 911.

Police said the suspect was found and arrested on a dock in the area.

Miller was booked into the Clatsop County Jail on the charge of first-degree attempted kidnapping.

Astoria Deputy Chief Eric Halverson credited the father and the witnesses in this case for helping officers catch the suspect.
