A man who ran away to Mexico with an 11-year-old girl in 2007 has been sentenced to nearly 23 years in prison.

Raul Xalamihua-Espindola, 29, pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree rape in May. He was booked into the Marion County Jail in December 2015 after being on the run for years.

Warrants were first issued for his arrest in April 2007 after an 11-year-old girl left a note for her parents in Keizer saying she ran away with her boyfriend, Xalamihua-Espindola, who was 19 years old at the time.

The case was reported to agencies throughout the U.S. in an attempt to track them down.

In May 2007, it was confirmed they were in Zongolica, Vera Cruz, Mexico. The girl was located in September 2007 and safely recovered in Mexico, but Xalamihua-Espindola escaped.

Prior to his return to Oregon late last year, he had been in a Mexican jail for two years litigating appeals regarding his extradition to the U.S.

Raul Xalamihua-Espindola was sentenced to more than 22 years in prison Monday.
