Film screening focuses on Portland's homeless youth

Posted: Updated:

Portland is in a state of emergency for homelessness, with thousands of people without a permanent home, including children.

Now, homeless kids are getting a chance to express themselves through film, thanks to a local organization that hopes to change lives.

A screening of four short films and a documentary was held at Revolution Hall in Southeast Portland.

The films focused on a different side of Portland’s homeless youth, showing the world through their eyes.

“This work is important,” Outside the Frame Executive Director Nili Yosha said. “They’re honest, they’re intimate, they’re hilarious.”

The organization putting it on is called Outside the Frame. This new Portland non-profit has found a way to empower homeless and marginalized youth.

“We all need something to be involved in that matters to us,” Yosha said. “These are raw, honest, original, hilarious and real films about the real issues they are going through.”

Carmen Corgis is one of the short film directors. Her film was inspired by the Wizard of Oz, with its own special take.

“They are all journeying to find health care that is inclusive of trans-identified people,” Corgis said.

“It’s a therapeutic intervention, because you get to tell your story and in that figure out what your story is,” Yosha said.

Tuesday’s documentary was called the Lost Boys of Portlandia. It’s a story about filmmaking, in which homeless youth debate if and how to make a return to mainstream society.

“I think it also gives us an opportunity for those of us who aren’t homeless to have an insight into the humanity, the smartness and the genius of the kids you might see who are homeless on the street,” attendee Chuck Barnes said.

“We have to welcome them back into the fold and give them a chance to contribute. They’re looking for it too,” Yosha said.

If you missed out on tonight’s showing, all of the films will be available on the web. You can find them at
