GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

It’s the kind of happy ending people don’t always get.

But thanks to FOX 12 viewers, Gresham VFW Post 180 can afford to make necessary repairs to the Gresham Heroes Memorial, which has been vandalized several times.

FOX 12 told you last week about how someone cut the rope lines on several of the flagpoles at the memorial, rendering the pulley system inoperable. It happened because thieves stole the lock plates off the poles last year, and they were too expensive for VFW Post 180 to replace.

Members of the tribal council for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde saw last week’s story on FOX 12, and decided to donate the entire amount needed, which came to an estimated total of $1,735.

“It’s awesome,” Navy veteran and VFW Post 180 member Tyler Marriott told FOX 12. “I mean that’s – I never expected any one group to do that much and just to cover it like it’s no big deal, here take this – it was heartfelt to me. Like, wow, that’s kind of cool.”

The money will go toward new flagpole lock plates, as well as the repair of the rope pulley systems and a set of brand new flags to honor each branch of the military, as well as police and fire.

Marriott told FOX 12 that tribal councilman Jon George said many tribal members are veterans and when they saw that someone would vandalize a memorial like this they knew they wanted to help.

Now, repairs should be finished in the next few weeks.

Marriott also said other donations have also come in since the original story aired on FOX 12, and each and every one is deeply appreciated.  All the donated money will be put into a fund for ongoing maintenance and future repairs at the memorial, which is in the process of becoming a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
