EUGENE, OR (AP) -

Lane County commissioners have endorsed a proposal to boost the legal age for buying and using tobacco products to 21.

The Register-Guard newspaper reports commissioners hope to implement the change countywide, but it's unclear whether the county has the authority to require cities to comply.

The commissioners Tuesday directed county staff to draft a potential ordinance, start outreach efforts with leaders of Lane County's 12 cities and organize meetings in several communities.

The proposed increase would be part of a national campaign to pass such laws at the local and state level. About 180 local governments have increased the minimum smoking age from 18 to 21.
