ROSEBURG, OR (KPTV) -

A man accidentally shot his girlfriend's 22-month-old son and the woman claimed a stranger was responsible, according to deputies.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office received a report at 4:18 p.m. Tuesday from a woman who said her baby was accidentally shot by an unknown man while they were hiking in the Idleyld Park area.

Brookelynn Weiker, 25, of Glide, took the child to the Glide Ranger Station for help. The boy was flown from a Roseburg hospital to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland for treatment.

The child is expected to survive, according to deputies.

Investigators said they became suspicious of Weiker's claim that a stranger shot her son and then ran away into the woods.

When confronted with inconsistencies regarding her story, deputies said Weiker admitted that her boyfriend, Bradley Karl Allen, 23, of Glide, accidentally shot the boy with a .22 caliber firearm while they were in a wooded area outside Idleyld Park.

Allen, who is a convicted felon and was wanted for a parole violation, ran from the scene. Deputies searched the Glide and Idleyld Park areas, but were unable to locate Allen.

Douglas Co. Sheriff's Office said Allen was later found at a home in the Green District area. He was arrested and taken to the county jail.

The weapon used in the incident was recovered by detectives.

The child's age was updated in this story after new information was provided by the sheriff's office.
