Thorns Emily Sonnett, Allie Long play soccer with local kids for Stand Together Week

Some lucky kids around the north Portland neighborhood got to play soccer at McCoy Park with U.S. National team stars from the Thorns as part of Stand Together Week.

"I am seeing a lot of through balls, left and right corners. Just little things like that, I am trying to work into my game," said Emily Sonnett.

Portland Thorns' rookie Emily Sonnett and fellow United States National Team star Allie Long joined their first year head coach, Mark Parsons, in playing soccer with the 4 Worlds United Soccer Alliance.

"Across the women's game that I have been involved with the last three years, the female athletes are exceptional at getting out, building connections and relationships," said Parsons.

During the game, lots of goals were scored and smiles were shared.

"I don't think it would be as special to be a professional athlete if you couldn't impact lives of other people, and be cool with everyone, so it was really special for me," said Long.

Back briefly from U.S. duties in an Olympic summer, Long could have chosen to simply nap but that wasn't in her playbook.

"It makes me so happy to make them happy. Get out in the community and show that we care," said Long.

After the game, Long fixed bike pedals for a lucky kid.
