PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man who smashed the glass door of a deli, ran away from officers and then broke into a southeast Portland home was arrested early Thursday morning, according to police.

Officers responded to Sami's Deli on the 17200 block of Southeast Powell Boulevard at 3 a.m. As they were on the way, it was reported that the suspect drove away in a smaller red pickup.

Officers spotted the truck driving north on Southeast 174th Avenue and initiated a traffic stop. Police said the suspect pulled into a driveway, got out of the truck and took off running into the neighborhood.

Multiple officers and a K-9 team searched the area, but the suspect was not immediately found.

At 5:15 a.m., a person in a home on the 2600 block of Southeast 174th Avenue called 911 to report a burglar running out the back door.

Officers were still in the area from the earlier search and took the suspect into custody.

Juan Carlos Alaniz, 50, was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of burglary and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Investigators said Alaniz was driving a stolen pickup.
