SPRINGFIELD, OR (KPTV/AP) -

A Thurston High School senior recently selected "Student of the Year" was arrested after at least one student told police the teen brought a gun to school.

The Register-Guard reports Joel Craig, 18, was initially arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct related to threatening text messages the teen allegedly sent. He was held for questioning Wednesday as Springfield police got a warrant to search his vehicle.

Craig was booked into the Lane County Jail early Thursday morning on an additional charge of possessing a firearm in a public building.

The latest edition of the Thursday High newspaper includes an article about the Elks Lodge naming the teen as its "Student of the Year." The article says Craig was honored for the time and effort he has put into serving the local community.

The student was scheduled to graduate Saturday.

Thurston was the site of a 1998 mass shooting. Kip Kinkel is serving a life sentence for killing two students and injuring 25 at the school. He also murdered his parents at home.
