Veterans Memorial Coliseum named a 'National Treasure'

Posted: Updated:

The Veterans Memorial Coliseum is the recipient of a major award, which is a big step in efforts to preserve the landmark.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation named the coliseum a "national treasure."

Last fall, Portland City Commissioner Novick introduced a plan to demolish the building. But Thursday, council members said they support preserving the 1960 building.

"We will stand with you to preserve this iconic structure," said Portland City Commissioner Nick Fish. "I have lived in other cities that have allowed great buildings to be demolished … it is emblematic of the disregard we have in our country for our history and the lack of respect we have for our past, and today we are here to say not here in Portland, not here in Portland, Oregon and not here with this building."

The city will be replacing the roof this summer.
