U.S. Navy ships arrive in Portland for Rose Festival Fleet Week

Posted: Updated:

Rose Festival Fleet Week is in full swing downtown, as three Navy ships have made their way to the Portland waterfront.

The USS Champion, the USS Russel and the USS Howard have made their way up to Portland from San Diego.

For Senior Chief Petty Officer Jeff Brown, this year's Rose Festival is a very happy homecoming. Brown is welcoming his fellow sailors to Portland and his hometown.

The last time Brown went to the Rose Festival, he was is high school. Now, 22 years later, he's already enjoying it in a new way.

"We must have been stopped by the public 15 or 20 times, saying thank you and shaking our hands. And that's what I was looking forward to and we got a whole bunch of it this morning," said Brown.

A total of 13 vessels will be visiting Portland for Fleet Week, from the U.S. Navy, The Royal Canadian Navy and the Coast Guard.

Civilians are invited to take guided tour.

Besides the grandeur of the ships, many are just impressed with the crew and the pride they take in their work.

"It's just awesome. These guys that go out and do their job and they love it. I'm glad to see them out there, and I'm so glad they bring their boats here so we can see it," said Heidi Farmer.

Brown said he's also here to be a good ambassador for the Navy, something that isn't hard with all the support he and his crew are getting.

"It's great to get that appreciation and from the community that I came from," said Brown.
