PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Along with entertaining soccer fans in the Rose City, the Portland Timbers, Thorns and T2 make it a priority to give back. In the month of May, they focused on inspiring kids to read.

The entire Timbers 2 team kicked things off with a visit to Rosa Parks Elementary School in north Portland.

During a reading assembly, they read Timber Joey's favorite book to the kids. Then, they took the fourth and fifth graders to a nearby field to host a soccer clinic.

The day ended with every student getting tickets for them and their families to go watch a T2 match at Merlo Field.

Also in north Portland, Timbers defender Andy Thoma took some time to read to students at Beach Elementary as part of the Timbers’ Rose City Readers program.

That same program is the reason why Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri visited the third and fourth grade classrooms at Vernon Elementary, where he and Timber Joey read a book to the students.

Valeri also talked to the older kids about sportsmanship and being a good teammate.

Local nonprofits benefited from the generosity of the Portland Timbers Community Fund board.

At halftime of a Timbers game, the board gave out $55,000 in grants to nine different organizations, all offer programming that fits within the Timbers’ core focus areas of youth education, youth activity and wellness as well as environmental awareness for youth and their families.
