PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The first set of data from an air monitor placed west of Reed College shows levels of hexavalent chromium that are above health-protective air quality goals.

Results of the latest monitoring data were derived from samples collected through May 23, according to the Oregon Health Authority. The data showed that hexavalent chromium levels were 1.4 times above the annual health-based target.

According to the Oregon Health Authority, the levels of hexavalent chromium were above the annual health-based target concentrations, but are below Oregon 24-hour screening levels.

None of the metals were registered at levels that would be likely to cause any immediate health problems for people, according to the Oregon Health Authority. Additionally, the findings do not indicate the need for any special precautions on the part of residents in the area.

This week, state inspectors will continue to review information collected during inspections of businesses in southeast Portland in an effort to pinpoint the source of elevated hexavalent chromium in the air, according to the Oregon Health Authority.
