VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A man slumped over in his car hit the gas pedal when he was approached by officers, rammed into multiple patrol cars and then crashed into a tree in Vancouver, according to police.

Vancouver officers were called to the 13500 block of Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard at 5:50 a.m. Monday to check on a man in a car that was idling in the roadway.

Officers said the man "gunned the engine" as the first officer approached and slammed directly into a patrol car.

The driver then hit other patrol cars responding to the scene and drove away, according to police.

After a brief chase, the suspect hit a tree and was boxed in by officers.

Montgomery A. Hedges, 21, was arrested on the charge of vehicular assault. He was taken to the hospital to be evaluated before being booked into the Clark County Jail.
