PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The massacre at an Orlando gay night club happened right in the middle of Pride Month across the country, and it has Portland Pride organizers stepping up security locally.

Organizers have strong security measures in place every year, but after what happened in Orlando, they’re taking extra precautions.

Debra Porta is a head organizer with Pride Northwest. Shortly after the mass shooting, she knew security would have to improve this week.

Right away Monday morning she said her security team met with the Portland Police Bureau to make sure they were on the same page.

Porta said she was also putting out the call for more people to volunteer.

The biggest points of concern are the Pride parade next Sunday and the Festival on the Waterfront, where organizers are expecting thousands of people over the weekend.

Porta said there will be extra security guards and only two points of entry with bag checks. She is also asking everyone who attends to be vigilant and aware in order to keep the whole community safe.

“We want people to know that we’re taking every step that we can to make sure that the festival and the parade are safe for our community and everyone who attends, and I feel we’re going to be a very safe place to be,” she said.

The first official Portland Pride week event is Tuesday night at the Q Center called “Meet the Author,” where fans can meet and hear from local LGBTQ authors. Admission is free.
