PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Oregon Zoo said its male African lion, Zawadi Mungu, is expected to make a full recovery after injuring the tip of his tail Monday morning.

The injury occurred during a training session as Zawadi was entering a training area from the outdoor area of his habitat.

The zoo said Zawadi's tail got caught beneath a closing hydraulic door. Staff were able to reverse the door and call him back so he could be treated.

"It doesn't appear to be a serious injury, and we're glad that Zawadi seems to be recovering well," said animal curator Michael Illig. "But you always feel badly when an animal you care for is hurt. We'll be reviewing all the details of the situation — from the building to the mechanics to our protocols — in order to make sure this cannot happen again."
