Erratic driver causing crash in Portland caught on camera, suspect sought

A Portland teenager considers himself fortunate that he and his friend walked away without a scratch after an oncoming vehicle crossed the center lane and forced him to drive into a ravine filled with trees.

The fact that the vehicle behind him had a dash camera is just downright lucky.

“It was really fortunate the guy behind me was recording, otherwise nobody probably would have believed me - you know - they’d just think I was driving fast,” Riley Read said Monday.

He and a friend were driving down Northwest Thompson Road in Portland Thursday when he said he had to make a scary split-second decision.

“They kept drifting and came right towards me and they forced me off the road to avoid hitting them head on and I went into a ravine,” Read said. “I don’t really remember it that well, but it was pretty scary.”

Read said his car is now totaled and he’s frustrated the driver of the other vehicle never stopped.

“I was pretty mad about that - we both could’ve been pretty hurt,” Read said.

Read said he and his friend both got out of the car unhurt, and then learned the car driving behind them caught the near head-on collision and crash on his dash camera video.

"I really got scared when I saw the video and saw how close it was, and saw the trees and the telephone poles and how badly it could’ve gone,” said Read’s mother Kim Read.

Multnomah County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the crash and looking for the SUV that crossed the double line forcing Read to swerve.

Read said he believes the SUV is a white or gray Lexus 330 RX that was built sometime between 2003 and 2007. The first numbers of the license plate could read 767 or 763. The incident happened Thursday around 2 p.m. on NW Thompson Rd.

Anyone with information on the case is urged to call the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.
