A woman helped her boyfriend run from law enforcement before seeking medical attention for her 22-month-old son who had been shot by the man, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Brookelynn Weiker, 25, of Winston, was arrested Monday on charges of hindering prosecution and criminal mistreatment.

The case began the afternoon of June 7. A woman reported that her baby was accidentally shot by an unknown man while they were hiking in the Idleyld Park area.

Weiker told investigators the stranger ran off into the woods after the shooting, according to deputies. Weiker drove to the Glide Ranger Station to get help.

Detectives said they became suspicious of Weiker's story, and when confronted with inconsistencies she admitted that her boyfriend had shot the boy with a .22 caliber firearm.

Bradley Karl Allen, 23, of Glide, is a convicted felon who was wanted for violating his parole. Deputies said he ran from the shooting scene and was caught the following day in the Green District south of Roseburg. Detectives said they also recovered the gun used in the shooting.

Allen was booked into the Douglas County Jail on charges of third-degree assault, felon in possession of a firearm, parole violation and possession of methamphetamine and heroin.

Further investigation led to the arrest of Weiker on Monday.

Detectives said they determined Weiker had aided Allen in departing the scene, prior to getting medical attention for the child.

The child has been released from Oregon Health & Science University and is now with family members who live out of the area, according to the sheriff's office.
