LONGVIEW, WA (KPTV) -

Someone broke into a Longview veteran’s car and stole military awards and keepsakes. Now, he’s hoping those responsible will have a change of heart and return them.

On Tuesday, Army Reserve Sgt. Stephen Burhmann described the feeling when he realized the items were gone.

“I kind of felt like I got punched in the stomach, like somebody had decided to erase part of your past," he said.

Burhmann’s Subaru Forester was parked in front of his house in west Longview on Sunday night. After a 16-hour work day, Burhmann went right to bed, leaving some bags and binders in his backseat.

Thieves got into the car and took everything.

“I immediately noticed that my two book bags full of dirty Army laundry and all of my binders with awards in them were missing," Burhmann said.

Burhmann doesn’t care about the clothes, shoes and tools that are gone. He’s only concerned about what’s in those binders.

Burhmann spent a year in Afghanistan, working as a combat engineer and helping to find roadside bombs. Afterward, he was given certificates of thanks and a commemorative coin from Gen. David Petraeus.

Now, those items have all been stolen.

If the thieves hear about Burhmann’s story, he hopes they’ll do the right thing and return his awards. He says they are part of who he is.

“It would be kind of like someone having your baby photos, your children’s photos taken. It’s not something you can put a price tag on," he said.
