CANNON BEACH, OR (KPTV) -

A woman accused of murdering her 2-year-old daughter and badly injuring her other daughter at a hotel on the Oregon coast has been deemed fit to stand trial.

Jessica Smith, 42, was arrested in August 2014. A judge ruled Tuesday that she is able to aid and assist in her own defense.

A frantic search was launched for the woman from Goldendale, Washington after 2-year-old Isabella Smith was found dead at the Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach. A housekeeper also found Alana Smith, then 13 years old, with severe cut wounds to her wrists and throat.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew located Jessica Smith two days later standing by her Chevy Suburban off a rural logging road 15 miles from Cannon Beach

A probable cause affidavit filed at the time of her arrest states she confessed to drowning her youngest daughter and to helping her older daughter cut her neck and wrists with a razor blade.

Her estranged husband's attorney said Jessica Smith was supposed to turn the girls over to their father on the day they were found in the hotel room.

During an initial court appearance in 2014, Jessica Smith smiled throughout the proceedings. Court documents filed in April state she attempted to commit suicide in jail.

Jessica Smith is in custody at the Clatsop County Jail. Her next court hearing is scheduled for July 6.
