CAVE JUNCTION, OR (KPTV) -

A man accused of sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl was arrested a month after he survived shooting himself in the head, according to police.

Police responded to a Grants Pass hospital on May 13 on the report of a girl who had been raped by a man known to her.

Detectives interviewed the girl's mother and hospital staff. The suspect was identified as Jeffrey Tarot Handley, 44, of Cave Junction.

The girl told police the abuse happened multiple times since she was 7 years old.

The following day, emergency crews responded to reports of a shooting on the 100 block of Enchanted Way in Cave Junction.

Investigators said Handley shot himself in the head with a .22 long rifle in the back yard of the home.

Handley was taken to the hospital and subsequently transferred to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland for treatment.

He was interviewed by detectives on Friday at Forest Park Care Facility in Portland. Handley was then arrested and taken back to Josephine County on charges including third-degree rape, first-degree sex abuse and second-degree sex abuse.
