PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Firefighters evacuated homes in a southeast Portland neighborhood Thursday after a construction crew hit a gas line.

A spokesman for Portland Fire and Rescue described the gas leak as "significant" after crews ruptured a natural gas line in the sidewalk area of southeast 45th Avenue near Hawthorne Boulevard.

Firefighters told residents on either side of the leak to evacuate their homes.

Other nearby residents were advised to close their doors and windows.

Southeast 45th Avenue was closed between Madison and Hawthorne streets because of the leak.

Firefighters said a crew from NW Natural responded to repair the leak. As of 10:45 a.m. the gas line had been shut down and the leak contained, firefighters said.
