GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A man who had just worked an extra shift at his job fell asleep behind the wheel driving home and flipped his car in Gresham, according to police.

Emergency crews responded to the 1200 block of Southeast Kane Drive at 5:06 a.m. Thursday.

They arrived to find a 2002 Hyundai Elantra upside-down in the gravel parking lot of White's Country Meats.

The driver, 27-year-old Johnathon Garrard, was trapped inside the car. Firefighters were able to quickly get him out.

Police said he did not show any signs of impairment. Garrard told police he fell asleep after working an extra shift and veered off the roadway.

He was not seriously injured.

"The Gresham Police Department wants to remind everyone that driving while tired can be as dangerous as being alcohol or drug impaired. It is better to find a safe place to pull over and sleep in your car than risk falling asleep behind the wheel of a moving two-ton battering ram," according to Gresham Police Department statement.
