PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A proposal for a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Interstate 405 in northwest Portland has cleared a big hurdle.

The Flanders Crossing would cross the freeway in between the Everett and Glisan overpasses. A state review committee just looked at the proposal, and a local transportation official said it looks like the project made the cut for state funding.

People Fox 12 spoke with Thursday say the bridge seems like a good idea.

"Anything that can get people walking downtown as opposed to driving downtown seems like a pretty good idea to me," said Anders Lund.

The proposed bridge would be 24 feet wide and would be only be open to cyclists and pedestrians.

If approved by the Oregon Transportation Committee this summer, construction would begin next spring, and would be completed by May of 2019.
