OHSU breaks ground on Knight Cancer Institute research building

Posted: Updated:

Oregon Health & Science University broke ground on the new cancer research building in southwest Portland on Thursday.

The new building is part of the one billion dollar Knight Cancer Challenge.

The 320-thousand square foot, 160 million dollar Knight Cancer Institute research building will have space for up to 600 researchers and administrators.

On Thursday, a large group gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking including Governor Kate Brown, doctors and cancer survivors.

"We all come from diverse backgrounds, probably different political opinions and parties, but we have on thing in common and that's that we hate cancer and we want to end cancer as we know it. That starts on the ground we're standing on today," said cancer survivor Rob Shick.

Construction on the research building is set to wrap up in July 2018.
