A jury convicted a man of aggravated murder for the bludgeoning death of his cousin's 71-year-old great-grandmother.

Micus Ward, 22, was found guilty on charges of murder and aggravated murder Friday.

His cousin, Joda Cain, was convicted of first-degree manslaughter in October 2015 and sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing Jacqueline Bell at her Cedar Mill home in October 2013.

A jury acquitted Cain on the charge of murder.

Bell's family said she fought to gain custody of Cain in 2013. She brought him to Oregon from Kansas in hopes of giving him a better life.

Two months after arriving in Oregon, prosecutors said Cain convinced his cousin to travel from Kansas to Oregon to help kill Bell.

Cain was 17 years old at the time and Ward was 19.

Cain and Ward gave detectives differing accounts of what happened, according to court documents.

Cain said he found Ward standing over Bell with a hammer and a knife. Ward said he was asleep at the time she was killed.

Ward told investigators Cain sent him a text message saying his great-grandmother was worth millions and he wanted her dead.

Cain and Ward were caught in eastern Oregon in Bell's car after a high-speed chase on Interstate 84. They had her jewelry and credit cards.

Deputies believe they were planning to drive to Kansas City.

Bell's body was discovered when a friend asked law enforcement to conduct a welfare check at her home.

A jury will decide next week whether Ward will receive a true life sentence or life in prison with parole possible after 30 years.
