Police: Nearly three dozen rounds fired at NE Portland hotel

Posted: Updated:

Nearly three dozen shots were fired at a Northeast Portland hotel early Friday morning, and now the Gang Enforcement Team of the Portland Police Bureau is investigating.

It happened around 2:45 a.m. at the Residence Inn Marriott Hotel near the Lloyd Center on Northeast Multnomah Street.

Responding officers learned that several of the bullets struck the side of the building and one even grazed a hotel guest inside her room. She was not seriously injured.

"It woke us up, we practically jumped out of bed because we were right there," Leah Finkelstein, who is staying at the hotel, said. "The officer pounded on our door to ask if we were alright, if there were any bullets in our room and he wanted me to open the door, and of course I wouldn't, I wasn't sure of anything."

Finkelstein is visiting Portland from Toronto, staying at the hotel along with her husband, daughter and grandchildren. She said the noise was so loud it sounded like an explosion.

Other hotel guests were awoken by the gunfire, too.

"All I heard was 6-8 gunshots, and I knew they were gunshots," Cecilia Hymer said.

"It sounded like firecrackers to me, loud firecrackers," Hymer's friend, Sandy Stumpf, added. "Like right outside our door."

Hymer and Stumpf were also staying at the hotel in the adjoining rooms, in town from Washington state.

Police said a person with ties to a criminal street gang was renting one of the rooms, and that several people were there partying.

Witnesses calling 911 after the shots rang out told police the suspects got away in several cars. So far, no description has been released and no arrests have been made.

"It's a little scary, and I don't know why I shouldn't be more upset about it," Hymer added. "I think we're starting to get a little too used to this kind of stuff going on. It's very frightening."

Hotel managers had no comment.

Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call the Police Non-Emergency Line at 503-823-3333.
