Portland Public Schools closes Buckman Pool due to lead paint concerns

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

More problems for Portland Public Schools after lead paint was found peeling at a public pool run by the parks and recreation department but owned by the district.

PPS shut down Buckman Pool until further notice.

Right now, it's not clear what the plan is going forward, although it's likely there will need to be some lead abatement before the pool can be reopened to the public.

According to PPS, an inspector with Multnomah County alerted the district to the lead paint problem on Thursday. The decision to close the pool was made on Friday.

The district said the paint in question was located in the locker room area.

Neighbors who have pushed to keep the pool open for years said the closure is disappointing, since the pool was closed all last summer for repairs to the roof.

"So we said last year, if you're closing the pool for the whole summer, do the maintenance. And we had a whole list of maintenance items we asked them to do, and that plaster was part of that list from last year, which they didn't touch," said Ken Diener.
