Bias Crimes detectives investigating fight on MAX in N. Portland

Bias Crimes detectives are investigating a fight between a transgender man and another man on a MAX train in north Portland.

Portland Police responded to the Overlook Transit Station on the report of an assault around 12:40 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found a transgender man suffering from non-life threatening injuries. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Officers spoke with witnesses who said the transgender man pushed and punched another man after hearing him use an anti-gay slur while he was talking on the phone. The other man responded by punching the transgender man.

The man got off the train and left the area. Officers found the him on the Interstate Bridge at Hayden Island, where he was taken into custody.

After reviewing witness statements and MAX train surveillance video, the man was released from custody pending further investigation.

Bias Crimes detectives will take the case to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office for review.

Bias crimes are any criminal acts that target a victim based on the suspect’s perception of the victim’s race, color, religion, national origin or sexual orientation.
